Founded in 1994, Eveoke Dance Theatre “cultivates compassionate social action through evocative performance, arts education, and community building.” To that end we produce an annual season of original dance theatre works that frame difficult debates, operate an extensive arts education program aimed at long-term, quality interactions between students and teachers, and produce the largest free dance festival west of Chicago. Our values are access, intention, and collaboration. Access is achieved through pay-what-you-can admission prices to over half of our annual performances (80 per year) as well as tuition assistance programs and scholarships for over half of our student population; intention translates into world-class dance theatre performances and effective, exemplary education projects; collaboration arises from the connections made across age, gender and cultural gaps which secure the lasting partnerships we build through our documentary work, performances in the ‘hoods’ and those of our annual free event, Celebrate Dance Festival, which galvanizes over 60 regional dance groups and is presented to 15,000+ residents and visitors in Balboa Park.

Voices: Mapping the Hood // Opens Saturday, May 17th

Do you live, work or play in City Heights or North Park?

Are you interested in participating in a community arts
and culture project?

We are very interested in listening to what you have to say. Your voice matters!

Initially, we will be documenting your stories through oral history interviews, videos, and photographs. We will then use some of the stories we collect to be part of voices: mapping the hood, a two-part artistic rendering of your stories told through a dance performance at a local theatre and a visual art installation at a local art gallery. We also plan on making your stories accessible via our website, so that your stories can be shared with others.

Do you want to participate? Do you know someone in your neighborhood whose story must be documented? If so, please contact us for further information.

We welcome your participation in this grassroots community movement! Visit Art @ the Core for more information.

Voices:Mapping the Hood is the culminating exhibit of Art @ the Core: Building Community, a community movement in North Park and City Heights that utilizes art as a catalyzing force for positive change. The goal is to increase access, engagement, and participation in the civic process through community cultural development. The gallery installation and the performance at the 10th Ave. Theater are the result of a year-long collaboration between Stone Paper Scissors, Eveoke Dance Theatre, TranscenDance Youth Arts Project, North Park Main Street, the Cultural Worker and many community members, students and families.

Opens Sunday May 17 // 10am- 6pm // In conjunction with the North Park Arts Festival for more information visit www.ArtProduceGallery.com/
